The multidistrict litigation (MDL - 1964) was created in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri and assigned to Judge Rodney W. Sippel to consolidate pretrial proceedings after more than 1,000 NuvaRing lawsuits were filed by claimants across the country. The first trials were originally set to begin in 2012, but were postponed on several occasions. The Rottenstein Law Group maintains a NuvaRing Lawsuit Information Center to help those who believe they have been injured best determine the next steps for determining if they have a case.

“It’s unfortunate that the first trials have been pushed back,” said Rochelle Rottenstein, principal of the Rottenstein Law Group, “because it puts off the potential recovery for the injured, but if the delay means that the parties will be better prepared to present their cases to the court, then additional time can be a good thing.”

Examining the Good and Bad of a NuvaRing Contraceptive

Nowadays, there are a lot of birth control contraceptives to choose from. One of these particularly unique contraceptives has grabbed the interest of many women worldwide because of its convenient method. This birth control procedure is better known as the NuvaRing.

NuvaRing is a type of vaginal ring that releases gradual amounts of hormones when inserted into the vagina to prevent potential pregnancies. During three weeks, this plastic vaginal ring will be placed inside of the vagina to allow the hormones to do their job.It will only be taken out on the week wherein a woman would be expecting her monthly menstruation.

One of the major factors that has brought recognition to this non-pill contraceptive is the fact that not a lot of women are comfortable with birth control pills anymore. To women who have failed at taking the regular birth control pill each day, this is certainly a huge and advantageous way of preventing an untimely pregnancy. However, the NuvaRing is not appropriate for all. Women who are possibly pregnant, smokers and those with a medical history of heart diseases and blood clotting are just some who will be advised not to use NuvaRing. This is due to the likelihood of acquiring one or multiple side effects that have been associated with the use of this vaginal ring. Some of these side effects are blood clotting, heart attacks, high blood strokes, heart disease, gallbladder disease, liver problems and even certain cancers.

Like most birth control methods, the NuvaRing exudes hormones to prevent a woman from getting pregnant. Not all hormones used as a contraceptive are the same, however.First, second, third and fourth generation hormones are just some of the differentiations between the hormones used for contraceptives. In terms of NuvaRing, progestin desogestrel, a third generation hormone is used. Howbeit, what makes these per-generation hormones different? Based on doctor’s extensive researches on these hormones, it has been tested and proven that third and fourth generation hormones are more likely to cause complications than the older contraceptive hormones. Moreover, it is because of these certain complications that might lead to serious health problems or even untimely deaths that a lot of health organizations have become wary of NuvaRing.
